In today’s episode of the Eurogamer Newscast, we discuss our reactions to last night’s inaugural livestream for Summer Game Fest, where we got our first look at new Sonic and Prince of Persia titles as well as a tantalising glimpse at Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth.
Where did we fail to look? Oddly, Square Enix didn’t show off Final Fantasy 16, the version that really releases in a few weeks. Hideo Kojima, the best friend of host Geoff Keighley, and the protagonist of Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty were both absent. After a series of male designers had taken the stage (and Nic Cage made an appearance), internet discussion quickly shifted to the lack of female representation.
On the plus side, nobody just walked on stage and wound up in jail. How do we feel about it all and where do we put this conference in terms of quality? How did you find it as an alternative to E3? Do you think Xbox, Ubisoft, and Capcom will surprise us in the next several days? Ed Nightingale and Victoria Kennedy are here with me to discuss all of it.
Reaction to the Summer Game Fest broadcast: Sonic, Sephiroth, and totally no women.
