Next week, Overwatch 2 will release an animated miniseries that serves as a prologue to the Omnic Crisis.
The Overwatch community has been requesting an animated series or film based on the hero shooter ever since the first game was released in 2016, thanks to the consistently high quality of the animated shorts. Now, developer Blizzard has taken the first steps towards making that vision a reality with a 2D miniseries titled Genesis: Part One: Dawn.

The first half of Genesis centres on the Omnic Crisis, the great war between once-peaceful (or merely loyal) robotics and the rest of the planet in the Overwatch universe. Maybe it’s more accurate to refer to the event as a robo metamorphosis rather than a battle.
Regardless, the above trailer shows how peaceful the world was before the argument and how chaotic it swiftly became. This disagreement appears to have provided us with some entertaining action sequences, so we have no complaints. The trailer also hints at appearances from fan favourites like Ana, Reinhardt, and Torbjorn, in addition to fresh new characters.
On July 6th, the YouTube premiere of Genesis: Part One: Dawn will occur. Neither the release date nor whether or not subsequent episodes will continue to focus on the Omnic Crisis have been announced.
The developers of Overwatch 2 recently scrapped plans to include a massive co-op PvE component in the game that would have allowed players to develop their characters’ unique powers, engage in role-playing-style progression, and experience incredible stories starring our now-iconic heroes. The developers have lately stated that the rest of the upcoming co-op content would be paywalled. The new animated series hopefully makes up for the stories that were discarded.
Regardless, the shift in focus begged the question: Why was a sequel to Overwatch even necessary?
