Magic: The Gathering’s Lord of the Rings set looks great: here’s more information
Expense the Pony can be a leader
If you haven’t heard, this summer will see the launch of a Lord of the Rings Magic: The Gathering campaign. While the imagery exhibited up until this point has been quite outstanding, it turns out that Wizards of the Coast’s team is far more involved in the game than just the art. Ovidio Cartagena, the set’s lead art director, gave us some insight into what to expect. Warning: This collection contains significant Wizards content.
What’s the handle theLord of the Rings set? A wrap-up
In addition to the ostensible aspect of “cash,” Cartagena describes the Lord of the Rings set as a natural suited for magic: The Gathering because of its commitment to “Universes Beyond,” which have merged with brands like Transformers, Warhammer 40K, as well as Secret Lair releases like The Walking Dead, Fortnite, and Street Fighter
The crew “all-in”ed” on the flavour of the set, which was the result of numerous hours of textual research study from Tolkien’s works, according to Liz Stewart, Senior Communications Manager at Wizards of the Coast. The Shire, Minas Tirith, and the Paths of the Dead will all be on full screen, and every country will contain the routes that the series’ characters had to take to get around the world; you can even make them out as specks in close-up shots, according to that research. The cast isn’t afraid to get funny in addition to those previously stated dangerous places. Pony expense is still there and even has the ability to be a commander. Cartagena reveals that Sam’s pots and pans have actually been included in “a number of cards as an Easter egg.”
The Lord of the Rings legalese can be difficult to understand for those of you who are not familiar with it. For this task, the team collaborated especially with Middle-earth Enterprises (MEE), a publisher of much of the “core” product, which includes The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and the deftly-stretched appendices (which are found at the conclusion of Return of the King and add some extra tradition bits to the mix). When I asked Cartagena about their experience working with MEE, she recalled:
Most of our work was done with Middle-earth Enterprises. It was quite easy. Given that the majority of us first encountered Tolkien’s heritage through his books, working within their constraints was a perfect fit. Yes, we wanted to make references to other passages, but since The Lord of the Rings is such a rich collection, we definitely had much to talk about.
Before delving too far into some of the most widely recognised explanations, the group first thought outside the box when asked how it handled some of the source material, particularly the Eye of Sauron:
How will you create the eye of Sauron?Well, we won’t be doing the eye. I like the way Sauron was created as this evil wizard; the Palantir is always within reach thanks to the armour. We were hoping for a braver picture of Frodo. Many years pass between the time he buys the ring’s home and the time he sets out on his adventure.
There is a Witch King card, and Nine Nazgul can be played together on the battlefield. The 18 borderless “joint cards,” which depict the Battle of the Pellinor Fields without borders, serve as the exhibition’s focal point. Wizards of the Coast refers to it as a “war painting,” and just one artist (Tyler Jacobson) tackled it. Cartagena offers some reflections on the event: “It was a remarkable undertaking. It took some time to obtain it. For reference, paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries were examined. Minas Tirith and Barad-dur are on opposite sides and took eight months to complete. It is assumed that it will be read from right to left, much like the scene does in the books.
This collection is a natural fit for legends (multi-step cards that unfold somewhat like experiences), which return. (I don’t mind!) Planeswalkers are not present. and Oathbreaker is still present, according to Mike Turian, the set’s item designer:
“In Oathbreaker, any cards from The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth goods are acceptable. Since we agreed early on that Planeswalkers didn’t fit the Middle-earth scenario, there are no Planeswalkers in the set. Additionally, we make an effort to mock Magic cards that work with all of our formats.
The Lord of the Rings Magic set will have 4 pre-constructed Commander decks
According to a press event, Magic will receive four brand-new Commander decks in the set:
- Eowyn: Riders of Rohan
- Frodo: Food and Fellowship
- Galadriel: Elven Council
- Sauron: The Hosts of Mordor
A collector booster, sample pack, and two renowned standard foils are included in each of the four Commander decks.
When is theMagic: The Gathering Lord of the Rings set coming out?
Jumpstart boosters, a beginner set, and two preconstructed 60-card decks will all be included in addition to the set itself and the aforementioned leader decks. Yes, a Secret Lair drop based on the 1978 Bakshi film will be available in June (call the Professor!). If you pre-order the set on Arena, Summer, Autumn, and Winter Ents are still included as digital Magic: Arena pets, along with an animal “One Ring.”The fact that the ring can melt if you lose a video game is wonderful, but it’s also quite fascinating given that Tolkien didn’t want certain elements of his writing to be romanticised.
Here’s a complete breakdown of when theMagic Lord of the Rings sets are out:
- Pre-release is June 16-22
- Arena (digital) launch is June 20
- Complete launch is June 23
