The year begins early for one city’s home builder.
In the beginning of the year, we were only given a brief description and a teaser video of Pioneers of Pagonia, a new city builder from original The Settlers designer Volker Wertich. Now, though, as its early access release approaches, we have been given our first proper look at the essentials by way of a new in-game trailer.
First things first: in Leaders of Pagonia, players are dropped onto the eponymous (and procedurally generated) islands of Pagonia with the goal of establishing a sustainable way of life there through production, economic growth, and exploration, making use of the resources they discover and the alliances they forge with Pagonia’s not always friendly natives.
More than seventy distinct items and decentralised supply chains are also assured for the early access release of Pioneers of Pagonia’s Steam. You and a friend will be able to wreck havoc on the world together in the cooperative mode, which is in the works.

Aaaand now! The first in-game trailer for Pioneers of Pagonia has given us our first look at all of this, and it’s very delightful, what with its animation styles, chunky visuals, and bright primary colours. Monsters, I guess.
Werewolves appear to be among the more fantastical animal types players will encounter on their journey through the ravaged islands of Pagonia, with developer Envision Entertainment noting that combat will be a part of the game but will not make use of real-time strategy-style controls. Instead, military and magical systems are linked to specific buildings and can be controlled from within them. Additionally, systems will automatically interact with preferred targets, and both good and bad compare are present in the game.
There is currently no specific date for the release of Pioneers of Pagonia, although it is scheduled for early access on Steam in “Q4” of this year, where it is expected to remain for at least 6 months.
