Director Dean DeBlois (who oversaw the entire animation trilogy) was attached to the project when it was first announced in February, but there has been no early word on casting.
This year, Parker impressed viewers as Sarah, Joel (Pedro Pascal)’s daughter in HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us video game (see out our discussion of how she helped make the most of Sarah’s limited screen time). She has appeared in films like Lisa Joy’s sci-fi thriller Reminiscence and Tim Burton’s live-action adaptation of Dumbo.
However, Thames made quite an impression in the 2015 horror film The Black Phone, earning praise from IGN’s review as the reason why the film was so well received: “a great deal of attention—and therefore a great deal of the appreciation—will truly be for Thames’ outstanding performance.”
It has been reported that filming for the remake will begin this summer. On March 14, 2025, it is expected to debut in theatres.
DeBlois also directed the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy for Dreamworks Animation, which became an instant classic and box office smash. They have earned over $2 billion at the box office collectively, and their many accolades include no less than four Academy Award nominations and a Golden Globe victory.
Adapted from the best-selling book series by Cressida Cowell, the films star Jay Baruchel as the young Viking Hiccup, CGI dragon Toothless, and America Ferrera as their best friend, Astrid, as they form an improbable friendship, overcome impossible odds, and convince the people of Berk to learn to live in harmony with dragons.
