Dead Island 2 evaluation: A ruthless, blood-soaked zombie slayer of a PS5 computer game
Zombies, we love to watch you carved up into gory pieces.
The undead usually meet their end in shreds, whether in The Last of the United States, The Walking Dead, or the first Dead Island video game, released in 2011.
And here we are again, using that tired old device.
Fight your way through a post-apocalyptic, yet very cute looking at points owing to next-gen tech, Los Angeles in this action-packed RPG.
And slicing, dicing, and otherwise destroying various undead animals is great fun in this bloody gaming classic.
You need only disable your reasoning faculties and strike.
The first-person action role-playing game Dead Island 2 features as much black comedy as it does body parts.
You take control of one of six’slayers’ who crash land their plane while escaping the zombie-infested metropolis, which has been renamed Hell-A by the developers.
There’s Dani, the foul-mouthed Irish musician; Jacob, the London banker who gave it all up to become a Hollywood stuntman; and Ryan, the stripper, to mention just a few.
Each has a unique personality and background, and their basic traits vary somewhat from one another.
Some characters have greater initial damage, while others have greater durability.
You’ll soon be upgrading any hero you pick to be a more formidable fighter creator once you get into the blood fever proper.
The mechanics of murder are front and centre in this video game.
Whether you’re searching the mansions of Bel Air or the sands of Venice Beach, you may arm yourself with anything you discover along the way.
You’ll be able to use the machetes, hammers, knives, katana blades, wolverine bear claws, and other weapons you uncover to do damage to the hordes of zombies roaming the area.
And it’s not just pointless hacking; you can pick and choose which sections of the body to sever, like cutting off the legs before proceeding to the brain.
There are a few particularly gruesome deaths, such as when blades go straight through a monster’s skull, sending its eyeballs flying and its teeth breaking out.
As expected, it’s all ridiculously over the top.
You’ll be able to experiment with new weapon modifications as you go, such as adding electrical shocks and fire to a standard blade.
There are also assaults on the environment. Throwing a battery into a pool full of zombies is a certain way to kill them all.
Did we mention that your protagonist has also been bitten by a zombie and is impervious to its effects?
That means there will be the occasional ‘fury’ session where you transform into a zombie and strike out at the living dead with your bare hands in a bloodbath.
Dead Island 2 is pleasant and full of fun and mischief; it’s vicious and gobby.
It’s full of tired gaming tropes yet recognises itself for what it is: nonstop brutality.
You’ve been sent to the abattoir.
Some gamers will be satisfied with that.
The option to play with pals in co-op mode suggests longevity beyond the game’s main narrative.
It’s repetitive, thus it’s probably best for people who like to kill plenty of monsters over and over.
Those who are searching for a deeper experience may become bored with the game after only a few hours.
DECISION 4/5
