As part of a new cost-cutting plan, Disney Plus may be removing additional films and TV shows.
The Walt Disney Company is continuing to examine content in light of its new “tactical modification,” according to a brand-new SEC filing on May 26. As a result, “certain material is being removed from its platforms” (H/T IGN).
According to a Deadline article from last month, Willow and The World On May 26, Y: The Last Man and other titles would be taken off of Hulu and Disney Plus, according to Jeff Goldblum. Disney has booked a $1.5 billion issues charge for the already-removed material, and it may receive up to $400 million more in removals, according to the SEC filing.
According to the filing, “the Company currently anticipates that any such charges and payments associated with certified material would be materially less than the problems charges associated with produced material.” The Company may also cancel specific licence agreements for the right to use certain materials on its platforms, which would result in the removal of certified material from those platforms.
This means that a brand-new list of films and TV shows could soon be departing the streaming service.
Disney Plus has undergone other changes besides the removal of content; CEO Bob Iger announced last month that Hulu and Disney Plus will merge into one app by the end of 2023.
