Complete stranger Things video game designer BonusXP to shut down
The studio that developed Netflix’s early forays into video games has shut down.
BonusXP, a developer of video games, has announced that it will be closing down. The Texas-based manufacturer announced on Twitter that it has “begun the difficult process of stopping operations.” Over the past eleven years, we have taken great pleasure in developing games for you. No specific explanation was given for why it had to be shut down.
The development firm BonusXP launched in 2012, with the 2015 PC gameServo as one of its initial releases.In 2017, Netflix awarded the studio a deal to create video games based on the terrifying Stranger Things series. The Stranger Things: 1984 mobile game was one of the company’s earliest forays into video games, and it was available for free.
Completely Stranger Things 3: The Game was released by BonusXP in 2019 as a tie-in to the third season of the show. Both games were included in the initial rollout of Netflix’s mobile app video gaming service in 2021. For the 2020 release of the one-season TV series Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, the designer also created a computer game to go with the show.
The designer closes their statement by saying that they are “helping our group discover their next opportunities.”
Vanpool, a co-developer on Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe, announced its own closure a day before BonusXP did. It’s also the beginning of the June layoffs in the video game industry.
