The Dark Pictures Switchback VR evaluation: A one-trick-pony PS5 scary rollercoaster
The release of the PlayStation VR 2 has been a boon for anyone interested in virtual reality.
With games like Horizon: Call of the Mountain, Moss, and Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge, the new console-based headgear is a joy to use.
Fans of the PS4 hit Until Dawn may now experience this new, peculiar game from the same studio.
The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR advertises itself as a terrifying first-person shooter experience.
Supermassive Games, using the capabilities of PSVR2, creates a roller coaster experience in which you must defend yourself against a wide variety of bizarre monsters and dogged assassins.
As monsters attack, you roll through stages set in blood-spattered abandoned hotels and ghost ships.
Some of the undead zombies come charging straight towards you, arms outstretched, while others shamble along the walls above, dropping to attack.
You start out with two pistols, but if you manage to hit the odd set dog crate as you race past on the rails, you’ll unlock the gatling gun upgrade.
Everything moves quickly and with a frenzy, slowing down and pausing on occasion to give you sandbox minutes where you’re attacked from every side.
The PSVR2 controller’s haptic feedback and adjustable triggers ensure that you feel every jump, fall, and recoil.
The eye tracking technology implemented in the headset also serves a useful purpose. Some monsters get more specific in their attacks when you blink, therefore you should try to get away from them without blinking too much.
You’ll have to duck and dive away from oncoming beams and backwards buses to avoid a collision thanks to the rumbling in your headphones.
The audio and video are both available in 4K resolution and 3D for a really immersive experience.
